R.I.P. Ingrid Pitt, 1937-2010

By now you've probably heard the terrible news that the lovely Ingrid Pitt has passed away at the too-young age of 73.

I'm not skilled at writing wonderful remembrances, but I find myself incredibly saddened by all this, far more than I would have anticipated I'd be.

Ms. Pitt was a horror icon in the truest sense of the word, the kind you just don't find in the genre anymore. Hell, she was a woman and an actress of the kind you don't find anywhere anymore. I'd never use the term "scream queen" to describe her, although if any woman could be considered horror royalty, it'd be her.

Just...damn. Like I said, I'm not skilled at this sort of thing, so I leave that in the hands of my fellow writers who are. Then go watch The Vampire Lovers or The House that Dripped Blood or The Wicker Man or Countess Dracula and raise a glass of red to the great Ingrid Pitt.

Aw, I hadn't heard the sad news - thanks for the sweet little tribute, Stacie. She was a gorgeous lady who lived an amazing life...

Such a sad day. She has always been one of my all time favorite leading ladies and I still proudly own the VHS copy of Countess Dracula she signed for me when I was a Hammer obsessed 14 year old. Good times...
A glass shall indeed be raised to you this weekend my queen...

That's sad news. I'm going to go watch something in her honor.

She lived a full, rich life in those 73 years and certainly had an impact on my young, developing male brain when I would see her in the Hammer films as child in the 70's. She looked fantastically sultry and had the acting chops to back it up. She really is the gold standard icon for the seductive, hyper-sexual-yet-scary female vampire archtype. The first film I saw her in was the classic Eastwood-Killin' Nazi's adventure WHERE EAGLES DARE (1968)- it was a small role, but she managed to make me forget Eastwood was on screen, which isn't easy to do to this Clint fan.

Rest In Peace, Ingrid.

Oh, I had not heard that. Horrible! She was one of the great ones, and the world is a lesser place because of her demise.

Raise your glasses, everyone. The horror community is small and weird and highly communal. Remember Ingrid Pitt, who did great work for us. One of our family has passed.

This was a truly sudden and huge loss. We also lost a Hammer director days later.
