Item!

According to Reuters movie news, Rob Zombie will be picking up writing and directing duties for the next Halloween flick, due out October, 2007. He's got a brand new vision! Yes, yes, they all say that, but perhaps Mr. Zombie means it. Sayeth Monsieur Zombie:
The look and the feel is going to be completely different. Halloween started off as a very terrifying concept, a terrifying movie. But over the years, Michael Myers has become a friendly Halloween mask. When it came to the point where you could buy a Michael Myers doll that was cute-looking and press its stomach and play the 'Halloween' theme, you knew the scare factor was gone.

But I think the story and the situation is scary. All it needed was someone to come in and to take a totally different approach to make it scary again. To me, that's the challenge and that's the fun.
He'll be ignoring EVERYTHING that has come before- all the sequels, all the crap- to create...not a sequel or a remake, but...you guessed it...a re-imagining.

This could be an interesting choice. I've yet to see The Devil's Rejects, but I found House of 1000 Corpses to be incredibly disappointing to put it mildly. To put it less mildly, I hated it. I admire the man's moxie and the fact that he's obviously a huge horror fan. I sort of caught glimpses of what he was going for in Corpses, but I thought it was highly unentertaining. Whatever he does to the Halloween franchise, it can't possibly be worse than Halloween 6 or the last rumblings of a Part 9 I heard- the whole Michael-in-the-asylum business.

A Rob Zombie slasher movie could be fun. He says the word 'scary' a whole bunch of times, so...umm...you know...that's something, right? And Sheri Moon-Zombie would make a perfect Lynda, come to think of it.

I think this could be great. "House of 1000 Corpses" was a mess of a movie, but it looked great. "The Devil's Rejects" is an amzing film - not a horror film at all. It's '70s-style grindhouse exploitation flick, and it rocks!

If Zombie can bring his original point of view and some of that '70s grittiness to what is now a fairly tame concept (man in mask kills people - yawn), this could be a wonderful even for horror fans.

I'm gonna have to second that. I loathed House of 1000 Corpses, and had no intention of ever watching another Rob Zombie movie, until people I trusted started telling me The Devil's Rejects was not only better, but leaps and bounds better than Corpses. And they're right.

If Rob Zombie wants to reboot Halloween, and he has Carpenter's blessing (which he says he does) then I'll keep a nervous eye on it.

Rob Zombie is a man of great talent but I'm not sure if he's the right man to helm a slasher flick. Then again, I've been known to be wrong in the past. I'll be watching the development of this project with great interest.

I too found "House of 1000 Corpses" less than "thrilling"...however..."The Devil's Rejects" kicked some serious ass!!!!

Zombie is damn near as sick as I am, so with a classic as background, this movie could be what I've looked for in Halloween since the second one....

ps.. I think The Devils Rejects should be considered as a film of the month selection...even though it isn't strict horror...

I feel that as long as Zombie doesn't write the script, it could be an okay movie. But both 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects suffered immensely from his total inability to write realistic dialogue. He has a great cinematographer and set designer working for him, so that's a bonus, but honestly, Rejects was stupid, immature, meandering, pointlessly graphic, and demeaning a bit.

That said, it was kind of fun, but in a trashy "I need to wash myself" kind of way.

I haven't seen either of Mr. Zombie's efforts. I avoided them because I heard him talk in interviews about making a horror movies like he was the Second Coming. This talk of "re-imagining" Halloween sounds like more of the same. We really don't need that. I really wish everyone would just leave bad enough (dude, Tyra Banks was in the Halloween. 'Nuff said) alone. If Hollywood can't come up with an original idea of its own, it'd be better off just re-releasing the original to theatres. The youth set would go because they have heard so much about it and the old fans would go for the chance to see the movie on the big screen again.

I am glad I am not alone in my hatred of 'house of 100 corpses', that being said it did contain one of my all time cinematic scenes - that crane shot lofting away from the cop on his knees, gun to his head, the only sound the song (some sweet country diddy that escapes me right now), then the ends, camera at its peak, and silence before BAM! and slump. an amazing scene. almost worth sitting through that movie just to see that but not quite.
I have yet to watch 'devil's rejects' though sources say it is better.
halloween may be good. but i am entering it wearily.

sorry about the omissions...
corrections-
"my all time cinematic scenes" should have read "my all time favoritecinematic scenes"
"then the ends" should have read "then the song ends"
again I apologize

I'm curious to see what he comes up with, in a way, but I feel like it's going to simply be a 180-degree turn from what made the original so great. This isn't to say Monsieur Zombie might not make a decent movie, but it seems like Zombie vs Carpenter will be crass vs. class. Loud vs. quiet. Porn vs...err, what's a romantic movie? You get the idea.

Zombie vs Carpenter...in the World...Series of Love. (10 points to anyone who gets that reference!)
