It seems that The Descent 2 is really happening. I mean, we all knew it would, but now that they're actually filming the thing and the first picture has been released, it's kind of a reality. Here's that first picture, by the way:

Not much to say, really, except that it coulda come from the first film- which I suppose is a good thing.

The latest news is that the entire original cast will be returning.

OMG, I totally feel ya, four eyes. The original cast, with the exception of maybe Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) is dead, n'est-ce pas? Oui! Therefore, welcome to Flashback Land. According to MyAnna Buring, who played Sam in the first film, we'll see some of the video footage that Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) was shooting during the first go 'round. Check out the blurb at Empire Online for...not much more info than that.

And with that tidbit and the photo, I'm calling it quits- not because I'm not looking forward to the film, but rather because I find myself getting those first twinklings of anticipation. I acknowledge that said twinklings could very well be indigestion, but I'm going to call them a begrudging excitement about the film. Sure, a sequel is unnecessary. Totes, I loved the first film a whole lot (as you may know) and the odds are against the follow-up being as good, but hey- it's been known to happen.

But why not look forward to it? Why spend the time writing bitch post after bitch post about it? What's the point? Why be an effing internet douchebag? It seems that they've stopped calling it The De2scent or The De2$$ent or The D22222222222222t or whatever the fuck they were calling it, which is clearly a step in the right direction. Life's too short to bitch about a horror movie that hasn't been made yet.*

And by "calling it quits", I mean that I'm done posting tidbits and set photos regarding this movie. I knew zip about The Descent going in beyond the basic premise- I can't recall whether or not I'd even seen the trailer. I only knew it had gotten great word-of-mouth and that I should see it. As far as I'm concerned, the less I know, the better. I've got the gist of the plot for this one, and that's all I need. So there.

So! I am officially declaring myself "greatly looking forward to this film, an attitude which I hope will eventually morph into pure excitement". I am also officially declaring, way far in advance, that The Descent 2 will be a Film Club Field Trip pick, as was the original film. So there again.

So, what'cha think? Looking forward to it? Looking forward to hating it? Don't care? Care too much? What's that smell?

*Tune in next week when I go off on the ridiculous notion that is the Platinum Dunes Rosemary's Baby remake!

Wow, okay, cool I liked the first one and I'm going on the bandwagon and say that I'm kinda looking forward to it.

Here's me bitching about a horror movie that hasn't been made yet:

FUCK My Bloody Valentine 3D. FUCK YOU. Thanks a lot for not even filming it in Canada or setting it in Valentine Bluffs. Also, thanks for blowing my hopes for a sequel to the original all to hell. Thanks for turning what is perhaps the greatest slasher movie of all time into a run-of-the-mill piece of modern dreck (I'm assuming, of course.) Thanks a lot.

(That being said, I hope the Descent 2 is awesome seeing as it has the original cast.)

Wow, those are surprisingly hopeful developments. Good for the producers.

And now Stacie dons her helmet with blinders and the la-la-la-I-can't-hear-you acoustic generator. She finds it excellent for staying away from pre-movie buzz, but rough on her driving record.

Hm... maybe the sequel will show what really happened. 'Cause I just never trusted that Sarah chick. Subterranean ghoulies... yeah, right.

But pretty cool that the whole cast of the first one gets to pull another paycheck (also assuming that it's a much beefier one).

I'm with Stacie on this -- I'm just going to try not to think about the sequel at all. There's too much disappointment in the world as it is.

Yay for your optimistic outlook Stacie. I'm still mad about it. *grumble* stupid US ending...

I agree that it's silly to bitch about a movie that hasn't even been made yet. So I'll bitch about one that has been made - the original Descent. One of the most overrated movies of the last five years. It's funny - the horror genre goes in the toilet with remake after bad remake, and then an original, nicely done film like the Descent (or is it? My friend said he saw a low budget Sci Fi original movie with the same plot about a year earlier)comes along and everyone RAVES about it. It's okay. It wasn't that great. It wasn't scary, for starters, and it was billed as a scary movie. It was a tense action movie, like Stallone's Cliffhanger. The director is obviously terrified of women. Any male director who makes a movie consisting solely of tough, hot women is overcompensating for something. (See Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 and Deathproof). The monsters in the Descent looked like Lord of the Rings rejects. Also, I always wondered - if these stupid monsters are so smart and know these caves like the back of their hands, why didn't they just leave? The girls found their way out in under an hour, so what's the big deal? Can't be that big of a cave.

Meh, some people like The Descent, others do not. However, your statement

"The director is obviously terrified of women. Any male director who makes a movie consisting solely of tough, hot women is overcompensating for something."

might be a just a bit off base. His first film consisted solely (or 99.9%, anyway) of tough, hot men, so I guess...Neil Marshall is... terrified of humans?

Original cast returning?

Means only one thing...

Flashback scenes!!!!

Hopefully a dog will have a flashback a la 1986 Hills Have Eyes Part 2.

I remember one of my rabid horror fan managers at the movie theater didn't like The Descent. I asked why and he said "It was boring! When they had to go across the pit, they showed EVERY SINGLE GIRL GOING ACROSS!" I told him he had mistakenly confused tedium for tension. This guy also though High Tension was "retarded because she couldn't have been chasing herself in the truck!" Some people take things too literally.

Oh god. The dreaded Rosemary's Baby remake. Usually I find myself pretty level-headed about the whole remake bonanza in recent years. "What's the big deal?" I say. "If anything it just proves how good the original is when the remake inevitably turns out shitty..." But when they touch something so near and dear to my heart as Rosemary's Baby...suddenly my cool is shot to shit.

I know there's nothing I can really do to change it. All I ask is that they don't hire Jessica Alba. For the love of all that is good and holy, don't hire Jessica Alba!

...(they're totally gonna hire Jessica Alba.)

I uhh...need to see the first one still.

God, I suck.

Look, it's sure to gimme at least three of the major Descent elements I'd possibly need: mutants, "tough, hot women" to quote Mr. Anonymous up above and a bunch of juicy splatter...that, plus popcorn and opening night with a screamy/jumpy audience is all I need, really. I'm easy like that.

On the subject of remakes, I am tingling with anticipation for Alexandre Aja's forthcoming Piranha 3D.

I'd like to think they'll find Juno in the sequel, wearing an apron and surrounded by bawling cave dweller babies whom she's always picking up after.

And for the record, I'm terrified of women... scared stiff!

That picture looks absolutely terrible.

What are these like pig-morphed creatures now????

The Descent was scary because of the mystery surrounding the creatures.

They're totally going to ruin it :::coughcoughJEEPERSCREEPERS:::
